Memory Card Error on digi cam?

I have an old digi cam - Ricoh Caplio RR730 - when I go to upload pics I have taken at a recent event it reads "memory card error"

Does this mean my photos are gone forever or is there a way this can be fixed?
Much appreciated if anybody can help as these photos mean a great deal to me!

Try the card at a photoshop. If it still doesn't work you have a major problem.

Some companies can retrieve pictures but at a cost. have a look at a camera mag in the small ads.
