Advice on purchasing the right memory card for your digital camera

With the use of an additional memory card you can store more pictures and videos with your digital camera or digital camcorder. Most cameras and camcorders come with inbuilt storage memory that is small in size and truly do not fulfill any ones storage needs. Many people often ask what is the perfect size memory unit to purchase for there digital camera as there are so many storage sizes available. In this article will provide you with some basic tips on finding the right size memory for your digital camera.

Find out what memory sticks are compatible with your digital camera.

Before going off and purchasing any old memory card you will need to determine what type of memory card your camera is compatible with. SD and memory stick memory cards are most commonly used on most brands of camera while xd iterations are usually exclusive to Fuji and Olympus branded cameras. If you have a digital camera or camcorder branded by Fuji or Olympus you will find your storage capacities somewhat limited as the biggest card available at the Monet is only capable of storing 2gb worth of data while memory stick and SD cards can hold a lot more.

Finding the right size for your needs.

The average size of a memory size is widely known to be 1gb. This size although not tremendously large, still allows you to store a descent amount of photos and short videos. Other factors have to be taking into consideration when choosing the right sized memory. These include:

Resolution of photo or video
Amount of photos and video stored
Quality of photo or video taken

These 3 factors are important in determining whats right for you. I personally recommend in finding a balance such as a 2gb-4gb card as it offers a good amount of storage while keeping transfer speeds fast. If going for a memory card larger than 8gb be sure your device is compatible. Some models of camera need a simple software update to recognise larger sizes of memory card.

Brand of memory sticks

The most reliable and affordable brand of memory on the market are those by Sandisk. Although this is not always the case, I personally find there products reliable as well as affordable compared to other name brands. As with most leading manufacturers there products come with an included warranty which is also a plus point in my view. Beware of imitation copies of memory card on the market, these cards are unreliable as well as illegal and i advice to stay clear from them.

Okay so I have a FUJIFILM camera and I want to get a new memory card. So I looked at the memory cards and well they are really expensive. Put then I saw OLYMPUS memory cards and they looked the same. So are they the same? Can I use OLYMPUS card for FUJIFILM?

Everything you need to know on xd memory cards

Originally developed in conjunction with Fuji and Olympus the Xd memory card offers a great alternative of storage medium compared to other types of memory card unit on the market. Unlike other types of card these were designed primarily for use with digital cameras and camcorders under the Olympus or Fuji brand, but are now being offered as an alternative on many various other electronic devices.

If you have a device that is compatible with these type of card you will find they allow for lower power consumption and rapid transfer speeds for both your video and photo needs. On the market today you will most commonly find 2 variations of Xd memory card available for purchase, these include the M range and M+ range of cards.

Difference between M & M+ Xd cards

Way back in 2006 fuji released there type M range to positive reviews. Allowing you to store up to 2gb data, at the time these cards were considered to be the best on the market in terms of portable storage. One drawback of the M rage was that although storage was adequate, read and write speeds were considered to be slow compared to the very first Xd cards prior to 2005.

Between 2008 & 2009 fuji developed a new range known as the M+. These cards allowed for lower manufacturing costs, up to 2gb worth of storage and more importantly faster read and write times compared to the standard M range of cards. At this moment in time there is no Xd memory card available that allows you to store more than 2gb of data, but this may change in future.

Should you purchase an Xd memory card?

Currently the Sd card variation of cards are the most affordable and offer flexible storage capacities to suit consumers needs. Xd memory units are known for there great reliability and unique functions they provide when used in conjunction with an Olympus or fuji branded product. If you already have a Fuji or Olympus product then I would recommend purchasing this type of card to get the most from your device. If you have a choice between Xd and other memory units then I would consider the other types before hand. This by no means means Xd memory units are not worth investing in to, it's just more affordable to purchase a larger size Sd card variation for example compared to a 2gb Xd card.
